If you're here, chances are you're prepping for a spring wedding. Well, spring weddings are so popular because they just make sense.
The days are longer, the scenery is gorgeous, and your guests won't be melting in the heat or freezing in the cold. Yay!
And you’ll have endless options when it comes to flowers, venues, and spring wedding colors.
I know there's a lot to think about when you're planning, so I've put together everything you need to think through as you prepare for your spring wedding.
From timing considerations to weather backup plans (and all of the fun stuff in between), we’ve got a lot of ground to cover so let’s get to it.
Timing Your Spring Wedding
Spring spans roughly March through early June, but…those months are not created equal! Each offers something distinct, so let's break it down.
Early Spring (March - Early April)
This window gives you that ahhhh, winter is finally over vibe. Think delicate budding branches, early tulips, and a crispness in the air.
But the caveat is that the weather can be unpredictable for your wedding day. I recommend having a solid indoor option or an elegant tent backup if you're going this route.
Mid Spring (Late April - May)
This is peak spring wedding territory. The weather tends to be more stable, most gardens are in full bloom, and you're far enough from major holidays that scheduling is easier for guests. May particularly offers stunning peony season.
Who doesn’t want peonies in a spring wedding?
Late Spring (Early June)
Technically this edges toward summer, but early June still carries that spring energy without the intense heat. Roses are readily available, everything is green and gorgeous, and you've got reliably long days for those stunning evening portraits.
Weather is Your Wildcard
Here's the thing about spring. Yes, she's stunning but she’s also occasionally temperamental. And I'd rather you go in with eyes wide open than be caught off guard.
Rain is a real possibility, and I need you to make peace with that now. But if you’re a glass-half-full kind of bride, here's my perspective. Rain on your wedding day isn't a disaster!
It's an opportunity for really great photographs under brightly colored umbrellas, and a story you'll tell forever. Some of the most breathtaking weddings were snapped during unexpected spring showers.
That said, planning intelligently is non-negotiable. If you're aiming for an outdoor ceremony, ensure that your venue has a weather contingency.
Not a sad backup plan, but two equally gorgeous options. Examples might be a stunning covered pavilion, a marquee tent with fabric draping, or an indoor space with floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outside in.
Temperature is another consideration. Spring days can start cool, warm up nicely, then turn chilly again once the sun sets. I recommend thinking through your timeline with temperature in mind.
Perhaps ceremony in the late afternoon when it's warmest, then transition indoors for dinner as evening approaches.
And please, communicate with your guests about attire. A simple note about any outdoor events and suggesting layers or wraps can save your loved ones from being uncomfortable. And save your photos from a sea of goosebump-covered arms.
Choosing Your Perfect Venue
Spring opens up venue possibilities that other seasons simply can't match. Gardens, estates, vineyards, and botanical settings all come alive this time of year, it’s almost theatrical.
Perhaps your drawn to venues with established gardens for spring weddings. You’ll be surrounded by professionally cultivated florals for the entire day. How romantic!
Historic estates often have grounds that have been tended for decades, that kind of mature landscaping creates a richness that newer venues can't quite capture.
When touring venues, visit during spring if at all possible. Photos from other seasons won't tell you what you need to know about how that space transforms when everything is in bloom.
And ask specific questions:
What will be flowering during your wedding month?
Are there particular areas that photograph especially well in spring?
What's the backup plan for inclement weather, and does it seem like an afterthought or a genuine alternative?
Also consider the practical elements. Outdoor ceremonies are glorious…until your guests are squinting directly into the afternoon sun or sinking into soft spring grass in their heels.
Look for natural shade, solid ground for seating, and logical flow between ceremony and reception spaces.
Creating Your Planning Timeline
Spring weddings require some specific timing considerations, so let's talk through when things should happen.
12+ Months Out
Secure your venue and lock in your key vendors (e.g., photographer, planner, caterer, florist). Spring is popular enough that premium vendors book early, and I'd hate for you to lose your dream team because you waited too long.
8-10 Months Out
Finalize your overall design direction. This is when you'll work with your florist to discuss what will be in season and available for your specific date.
Spring offers incredible variety, but certain flowers have narrow windows, so planning ahead ensures you get exactly what you're envisioning.
6 Months Out
Send save-the-dates, finalize your ceremony and reception timeline, and confirm all vendor contracts. This is also when you'll want to nail down your weather contingency plans so everyone's on the same page.
3-4 Months Out
Send formal invitations, finalize your menu with your caterer, and complete your rentals order. If you're planning an outdoor event, this is when tenting decisions need to be final.
1 Month Out
Confirm every detail with every vendor. Walk through your timeline obsessively. Make sure your day-of contacts have each other's information. Then take a breath, you've done the work!
Bringing Your Spring Vision to Life
The details of your spring wedding should be cohesive, like every single consideration and decision is in conversation with the season and with each other.
I say let the season guide your choices rather than fighting against it.
Incorporate the natural colors outside your venue. Choose linens that complement rather than compete with the flowers around you.
Select a menu that highlights what's fresh and local in spring. Some yummy options include lamb, asparagus, fresh peas, strawberries, and light preparations that are appropriate for the weather.
The same goes for your spring colors. Spring gives you such a gorgeous range to work with, from soft pastels to vibrant jewel tones. Have a look at some possibilities in my spring wedding colors guide if you want more inspiration there.
Create a "Wedding Weekend Weather Kit" for Your Guests
Here's something I recommend that most planning guides skip over entirely… come up with a small weather kit for your guests, especially for outdoor spring weddings.
Think about it. You've spent months planning every gorgeous detail, but your guests are showing up not quite knowing what to expect from that unpredictable spring weather.
I love the idea of setting up a pretty basket or display near the ceremony entrance stocked with elegant essentials:
- Chic pashminas or wraps in your wedding colors
- Tasteful compact umbrellas (clear ones photograph beautifully)
- Delicate paper fans if you're in a warmer climate
For an elevated touch, consider adding an interactive component, perhaps a custom cocktail station nearby where guests can warm up (or cool down) depending on the weather.
It’s a small gesture that: 1) shows your guests you've thought of everything, 2) keeps everyone comfortable, and 3) prevents that awkward moment where half your bridal party is shivering in photos.
Plus, the wraps and umbrellas can double as favors your guests can take home and actually use again!
